Something has been bothering me.

Maybe it’s only because I spent a big chunk of last fall handcuffed to someone else (I was in a play) and being forced to try to shoot a gun left-handed when I’m right-handed (same play), but this scene from Reichenbach Fall struck me as odd.

Sherlock is right-handed. Very right-handed. When he is really seriously aiming a gun, he shoots right-handed. For example, the end of The Great Game.

There are two exceptions to this:

1.) The Great Game - he shoots left-handed when he’s sitting in the chair and shooting at the wall. Why? Well, obviously he’s not in the best position to shoot right-handed. However, the minute he stands up, he switches to his right hand. He even shoots from behind his back right handed.

2.)Scandal in Belgravia - he holds the gun in his left hand while training it on the American agent he has tied up in the flat. Why? He’s using his mobile in his other hand. He tends to use his phone right handed, and he had to dial, which he probably used his dominant hand for, so he switched the gun to his left hand.

So the scene in Reichenbach when he pulls the gun on the cops strikes me as odd for several reasons:

1.) He takes the gun from the cop with his left hand, not his right. His right hand, however, is free. His left hand is weighed down because it’s attached to John.

2.) Rather than switching the gun to his right (free) hand, he keeps it in his left hand to shoot it in the air and aim it at the cops. This would be slightly hampered by John’s arm leashing his left arm.

3.) He switches it to his right hand ONLY when he has to point it at John. Obviously, it would be difficult to point the gun at John with his left hand since they’re attached.

4.) Later, when they throw themselves in front of the bus and are rescued by the assassin, Sherlock takes the assassin’s gun. He takes it and aims it left-handed. He is still handcuffed to John at this point.

We know that Sherlock almost always shoots right-handed unless his right hand is not the best one for aiming (Great Game, in the chair) or is otherwise occupied (Scandal) … so WHY, when his left isn’t his dominant hand, and is also handicapped by being tethered to John’s arm, would Sherlock DELIBERATELY use his left hand instead of his free and unoccupied right?

From experience I can tell you that being handcuffed to another person, and trying to run, move… hell, trying to do much of anything, is awkward and difficult. Also, it HURTS to use that arm if the other person isn’t actively aware of what you’re going to do with that arm and moving to assist you.

So WHY would Sherlock use that hand instead of his free, dominant hand?

One could argue that he wasn’t seriously aiming it because he didn’t actually want to shoot someone, thus he didn’t need to use his steadier hand. However, I would say that that’s when you would MOST want to use your steadier hand—to avoid accidentally shooting someone you didn’t intend to shoot. Also, in the second scene with the assassin, he IS seriously aiming it.

So what does that leave us with?

Could it have been a symbolic and/or aesthetic movement on the director’s part? That’s probable. Sherlock and John have had their weaker hands handcuffed together, leaving their dominant hands free, forcing them to be a stronger, more cohesive unit. Aesthetically, it looks better in the shot to have the gun in the center of the frame, between the two of them.

But Sherlock, the show, seldom does things or shows us things that don’t have some kind of reason. So I keep coming back to to this:

Could his right hand have been occupied? If so, with what? The only answer I’ve got for that is that he may have been doing something with his phone.

So much of Reichenbach Fall seems like sleight of hand, to me. And so it makes a twisted sort of sense that while everyone is busy paying attention to Sherlock’s left hand, we’re not even thinking about what his right hand is doing.

Also, moffat said that sherlock did something uncharacteristic that we missed. This could be it. He also asked questions on the roof pretending he wasnt sherlock holmes who knew everything always. HE pretended to be dumb while he held his phone behind his back, so he was probably recording moriarty’s profession. He tells john that this is his note, maybe referring to the phone he then throws to the side before he falls. Why throw it to the side? Why not jump off with it if u intend to die?

…and then we all went insane waiting for season three…

I’ve seen a lot of posts on my dash tonight about users who are threatening suicide, with other Tumblr members posting in effort to try to get ahold of them. I think you all should see this:

IF THERE IS EVER A TUMBLR USER WHO HAS POSTED A GOOD-BYE MESSAGE, SUICIDE NOTE, VIDEO, OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS POST.

1. Scroll to the top of your dashboard.

2. See the circular question mark icon at the top? It’s the third one over from your home symbol. Click on that, and a screen similar to the one in the picture will come up.

3. Where you can type in questions, the box with the magnifying glass at the top, type in the word “suicide.”

4. Click on the first link that shows up. It should say, “Pass the URL of the blog on to us.”

5. Type in the user’s URL and tell Tumblr admin that the user is contemplating suicide and has posted a message indicating that they are going through with it or will be attempting. Hit send! Tumblr administration will perform a number of actions to contact the user and take the necessary steps to prevent the suicide.

TUMBLR: THIS COULD SAVE A USER’S LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE SUICIDE THREATS.
